چکیده

Muon storage rings have been proposed for use as a source of high-energy neutrino beams (the Neutrino Factory) and as the basis for a high-energy lepton-antilepton collider (the Muon Collider). The Neutrino Factory is widely believed to be the machine of choice for the search for leptonic CP violation while the Muon Collider may prove to be the most practical route to multi-TeV lepton-antilepton collisions. The baseline conceptual designs for each of these facilities requires the phase-space compression (cooling) of the muon beams prior to acceleration. The short muon lifetime makes it impossible to employ traditional techniques to cool the beam while maintaining the muonbeam intensity. Ionization cooling, a process in which the muon beam is passed through a series of liquid-hydrogen absorbers followed by accelerating RF cavities, is the technique proposed to cool the muon beam. The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) collaboration will carry out a systematic study of ionization cooling. The MICE experiment, which is under construction at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, will begin to take data late this year. The MICE cooling channel, the instrumentation and the implementation at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory are described together with the predicted performance of the channel and the measurements that will be

Emittance Measurement in MICE

A muon collider [1] may be the optimal way to study high-energy lepton-antilepton collisions, and a neutrino factory [2] based on a muon storage ring may be the ideal tool for the study of neutrino oscillation and the search for leptonic CP violation. Ionization cooling [3, 4], while not yet experimentally demonstrated, is essential for highluminosity muon colliders and has been shown by simula...

Pion contamination in the MICE muon beam

The international Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) will perform a systematic investigation of ionization cooling with muon beams of momentum between 140 and 240 MeV/c at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory ISIS facility. The measurement of ionization cooling in MICE relies on the selection of a pure sample of muons that traverse the experiment. To make this selection, the MICE Muon Beam...

Status of the Mice Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment*

Muon ionization cooling is the only solution to prepare high brilliance muon beams necessary for a Neutrino Factory or Muon Collider. The International Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) is under development at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). A dedicated beam line generates a range of input emittances and momenta, with time-of-flight (TOF) and Cherenkov detectors to ensure a pu...

A Sensitivity Study for a MICE Liquid Hydrogen Absorber

The International Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) is devoted to a study of a muon cooling channel capable of giving the desired performance for a Neutrino Factory. One of the goals is achieving an absolute accuracy of measurements of emittance reduction as high as ±0.1%. The paper describes results of a Monte Carlo study on allowed density variations of liquid hydrogen corresponding t...
